Junior Drill of the Month: The Floor is Lava
This month's junior drill is a really simple one — and one of my favourites. It's called The Floor is Lava, and it's especially useful for helping juniors keep their front foot a bit more stable through the swing.
A wandering lead foot is one of the most common things we see in junior swings — the heel spins out, the foot slides, and with it goes balance and strike. This drill turns fixing it into a game.
How it works
-
1
Set up to the ball as you would normally.
-
2
Place 4 balls around the lead foot — just in front of the toe, just behind the heel, and one to either side of the foot.
-
3
The area where the foot is now placed is considered "the rock" — and safe from the lava.
-
4
Now try to make a swing, keeping the foot safely within the area of the balls and on the rock.
-
5
If you knock the balls, or the foot comes out of the area — you lose a life!
Keep it fun
Give it a go next time you're at the range and let us know how you get on! It's a great drill to pair with a Toptracer game like Angry Birds to keep it fun — stay on the rock while you knock the pigs down.
"The best junior drills don't feel like drills at all — they feel like games. If the front foot stays quiet, balance and strike look after themselves."

Junior Summer Coaching Camps at Avington
Love drills like this? This summer we're running junior coaching camps at Avington — a brilliant, friendly course just outside Winchester and the perfect place for juniors to take their game from the range to the fairway. There's no better way to improve than a whole day immersed in golf: fun, games-based coaching just like The Floor is Lava in the morning, then out onto the course to put it into practice for real — with every session led by our coaching team.
Half day · 3 hours
Includes day-pass green fees at Avington — stay and play after your session.
Full day · 6 hours (e.g. 10am–4pm)
Includes 2× green fees at Avington — a proper full day of learning and playing.
Bring your friends! We really encourage juniors to team up and come along together — golf is always more fun with your mates, and it makes the day better value too: a group of four gets a half day of expert coaching plus the course for just £75 each. Don't have a group? No problem — email us and we'll happily match your child with others of a similar age and level.
Camps run through the school summer holidays and places are limited, so get in touch early to secure a spot.
To book or ask a question, email us at hello@winchestergolf.co.uk — tell us your child's age and experience and we'll find the right group.
